Wednesday Wings - Yellow-Shafted Flicker

The Yellow Shafted Flicker is a rare guest at the feeding station.

It's always a lone female and she doesn't appear until late February.

I imagine her dreaming of eating her favorite food, ants, while she has some suet to make do until spring.

This picture is reposted from last year when I was lucky enough to get a good shot of her yellow shaft.

I thought the males were the ones with the red spot on the back of their necks?

We get them here, too, but the redshafted are much more common that the yellow. Such pretty pretty birds.

And I was totally wrong. That's the downy and those other wee black and white ones.

Male flickers have a dark streak on their faces.

The things you learn from other knitters! :)
